Home Remedies for Cough
Cough occurs due to infection of respiratory tract. Cough persisting longer than three weeks is harmful for one’s health. Many reasons can work behind brief cough such as cold air, irritating fumes, dust and entry of food particles in air passage but one should definitely see a doctor if it persists longer.
Here are some of the home remedies for cough:-
Raw garlic topped in the list when it comes to home remedy for cough. Eat 2-4 cloves of raw garlic once in a day during cough, if not toss it in salad or use the slices of garlic in soup.
The antiviral properties of ginger help in preventing cough. Add two teaspoon freshly chopped ginger in two cups of water. Bring it to boil. To add the taste add one or two teaspoon of honey and drink it but not more than 3 cup a day.
Clove soothes the throat and reduces the irritation.
Sulphur containing mustard seeds is much useful for wet cough that stimulates the growth of mucus. To have the full effect of seeds crush or grind the seeds and put it into warm water. Stir it well and drink it.
Pepper, a bit irritant is useful for those who suffer from cough. The irritating property increases the mucus flow in the sinuses and airways. Add powdery black pepper and honey in hot water. Stir it and sip.
Gargle is the most effective and easiest remedy to prevent cough. Mix ¼ teaspoon of salt in one glass of warm water and gargle. Do this after a fixed interval of two hours for the desired result.
Homemade cough syrup is much better than store brought. Mix thyme, peppermint, mullein and licorice in one cup of boil water. Cover it for half an hour and add honey. Stir it well till it gets dissolved. Take one teaspoon as and when needed. It will surely clear the air passage and help reducing inflammation.
Soups especially chicken soup helps in calming the cough as it has anti-inflammatory properties which prevent miserable side effects of cold and cough. Moreover, it tastes yummy.
Steam is one of the best home remedies for cough as it flushes out the mucus and moisturises the day air passage ways. Boil the water and place it in cooking pot. Add Vicks Vapo Rub or few drops of essential oil of eucalypts. Drape your head with a towel, lean over the pot and inhale gently for at least 10 minutes.
