Baba Ramdev’s Yoga to prevent hair loss


Nothing taunts you more than a receding hairline or the increasing volume of hair in your comb rather than your head. Hair fall is a common problem in India. It is not just something that comes with old age; rather people from all age groups suffer from this problem. There are many reasons cited for hair loss. It could be a side effect from some medicine you have been taking for some illness, it could also result from hormonal imbalances, for women it could be because of all the chemicals we use in our hair like colour, straightening and curling gels or too much heat from blow driers or straightening irons.

According to Yoga guru Ramdev Baba, yoga cannot stop hair loss but it can accelerate the growth of hair in the areas where it has fallen. One very common practice suggested by Baba Ramdev for hair growth is to run the nails of the hands against each other. This enhances blood circulation in every part of the skull and hence accelerates hair growth.

As per Baba Ramdev the reasons or rather the causes for hair loss are increasing levels of stress and anxiety, poor diet and poor blood circulation. To enhance blood circulation he recommends headstand pose which allows the downward flow of blood to the head. Asanas like Vajrasana, pawanmuktasana, the camel pose and the downward facing dog pose are essential yoga poses he recommends for hair loss.

Like all forms of Yoga and Ayurveda it is important to be patient and to understand that you need to religiously practice Yoga for about 3-9 months to be able to see the results of the yoga. It is not instant.

Baba Ramdev’s recommended yoga for hair loss is below:

Bhastrika breath: Take deep breaths such that the air from your lungs and diaphragm are completely pushed out. This should be done for about 2 minutes and not for more than 5 minutes at a stretch. Bhastrika Breath helps in pumping fresh air to your entire body including the head and hence makes quick hair growth possible.

Kapalbhati breath: It is also commonly referred to as sneeze-like breathing since it happens quickly. All you have to do is touch your chin to your chest and breathe in and out of your nostrils quickly. As beginners you should try this for not more than a minute at a stretch and gradually you can go up to about 15 minutes.

Anulom Vilom breath: While this is not the natural way in which we breathe, Baba Ramdev’s anulom vilom pranayama is clearly one of his most practiced asana. With your left thumb close your left nostril and inhale through your right nostril and then with your index finger close your right nostril and exhale through the left one.
